Michael D. Yapko, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and marriage and family therapist residing in Fallbrook, California. He is internationally recognized for his work in clinical applications of hypnosis, treating depression, and developing strategic, outcome-focused psychotherapies. He routinely teaches to professional audiences all over the world. To date, he has been invited to present his ideas and methods to colleagues in 29 countries across six continents, and all over the United States.

Dr. Yapko is the author of numerous books, book chapters, and articles on the subjects of hypnosis, depression, and the use of strategic psychotherapies.

Dr. Yapko is a member of the American Psychological Association, a clinical member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, a past Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine’s Division of Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine (in England), a member of the International Society of Hypnosis, and a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

He is a recipient of The Milton H. Erickson Lifetime Achievement Award  (2007), twice a recipient of the Arthur Shapiro Award for the “best book of the year on hypnosis” from the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis for Treating Depression with Hypnosis (2001) and Hypnosis and Treating Depression (2006), and the 2003 Pierre Janet Award for Clinical Excellence from the International Society of Hypnosis, a lifetime achievement award honoring his many contributions to the field.

On the personal side, Dr. Yapko is happily married to his wife, Diane, a pediatric speech-language pathologist who specializes in the treatment of autistic spectrum disorders.

There has never been a better time to be an ASCH member.  Almost every month we are announcing additional member benefits.  This month we are offering just 30 members (first come first serve) a clear and significant advantage that will get them more clients.  The ASCH executive has negotiated a deal with its conference partner, Natural Therapies Pages, to produce short promotional videos that can be placed on your NT page, your own website, or anywhere else you want to, for the ridiculously cheap price of $299.

How does it work?  At the Conference in July Natural Therapies pages will bring a professional videographer and interviewer to shoot an interview with you, to help prospective clients get an understanding of what you do and how you can help them.  It will be shot in front of a green screen so you can put messages, backgrounds and logos behind you.  Over the 2 days they can only shoot 30 interviews.  Normally they are charging up to $1750 for one of these so it is a real saving, and could catapult your practice forward. 

How do you get to be one of the 30?  Firstly you must be attending the conference.  Secondly, the first round of offers will go the the PTSD workshop attendees this Sunday 28th March.  Then if there are spaces left over, they will be listed on the website.  At the workshop, consistent with our goal of getting you more clients and promoting Hypnotherapy in general, we will be handing out some free samples of the new BRAND we have been working on - the ASCH Hypnotherapist.  This promotional DL is something you can purchase at a moninal fee and have overprinted or stamped to tailor it for you.  To book for the workshop:

This is a professionally produced CD featuring the voice of Kaey Hammond, a hypnotherapist with a practice in Prtsea, Victoria.

The CD originated following a facelift operation both she and her husband experienced in 1999. They had decided that upon reaching a milestone in life – their 50th birthday, they would treat themselves to eliminate some natural ageing processes. Following that experience, Kaey decided to produce a hypnosis program CD to help those about to face medical and dentistry procedures.   The objective of this self hypnosis program was to help alleviate anxiety and nervousness and to produce a calm and relaxed state.

There are two tracks, the first is the full version and runs for approximately 34 minutes. The second track is a condensed version referred to as the “Brain Gym” with a run time of 6 minutes.  

I found Kaey’s voice very soothing to listen to and the background music seemed to blend in with her well enunciated words. There are many hypnosis CD’s on the market for just about every type of problem but this one is very direct in its approach for people about to face medical and dental surgery. The tempo used is a relaxed rhythmical style with a clever deepening section.

Fertility by Hypnosis(R) Consultant Training

The inaugural training of the newly-launched HypnoFertility Foundation Inc. was recently presented by Alan Patching, and is the culmination of years of experience by hypnotherapists, Lynsi Eastburn and Art Leidecker who both run their own Hypnotherapy Training Schools in America.

Lynsi Eastburn, a specialist in hypnofertility and author of the book “It’s Conceivable”, first conducted training in Sydney in 2007 -  Art became inspired to be a hypnotherapist when he retired after working for 45 years in marketing.  In 2009, they became founding directors of the international HypnoFertility Foundation Inc. and during the training we met them both through a Skype link-up. They spoke at length, answered questions and announced their plans to organise the first World Wide Conference on Unexplained Infertility in Chicago in March, 2011.

The goal of the programme is not simply for the client to become pregnant, but rather to enable the client to attain personal empowerment, and make changes to enhance their life.  The training is comprehensive – covering specific counselling/hypnotic/NLP processes and techniques, scientific understandings of fertility issues, and an  introduction in the use of technology such as the Thoughtstream biofeedback system. The course also provides plenty of marketing strategies.

Alan’s substantial skills and expertise as a hypnotherapist were enjoyed and experienced by the group.  We also appreciated his dynamic style and his entertaining and interesting presentations and demonstrations. I feel ready to go, having received such extensive learning in the 2 full days.

A 112+ page workbook completes the course, featuring all requirements for the hypnotherapist such as  intake sheets, scripts, journal articles, and a glossary of infertility terms.  Alan generously supplemented the workbook with his own e-books on marketing.

Most importantly in this programme, Lynsi, Art and Alan emphasise the independence of the hypnotherapist.  Their motto is “Support not Control”.  We are supported by the Foundation, being listed as Fertility Consultants on their website www.hypnofertilityfoundation.org. and are encouraged to belong to other birth and fertility organisations.  The Foundation is also offering training in their new Birth By Hypnosis ® as the Fertility by Hypnosis® clients often wish to continue with hypnotherapy throughout their pregnancy and to also utilise its benefits for the birthing process.

Why do we see Illusions?


The Human brain put images together because they have learned to expect things, and sometimes the data might get a little confused.

We may see an illusion because we know what we are expected to see, even though part of a picture or design may not be completely there. The basis of this is in how we perceive things.

That almost explains everything right there. If our brain and eyes did not function like they do, we would not see illusions like we do.

One example of optical illusion is the television. The television just shows us a continuous flow of still pictures, one right after the other. Our eyes along with your brain fill in all of the empty spots. Our brain has learned to expect movement. As a result, our brain can fill in all of the missing pieces and the television appears to be actually moving to you, even though it really isn’t!

A computer monitor is also one big optical illusion. Sometime when you have a chance, look at a computer screen really close for a minute or two. You will notice that you computer screen is made up of tiny red, green, and blue dots. The illusion is, you see more than just red, green, and blue dots; you see thousands of different colors. Our brains put the red, green, and blue dots together to make the colors.

Optical illusions just trick you into seeing something else. They are an error in our perception of the illusion.
